The Kerala government on 14 January 2010 raised the retirement
age of medical college teachers from 55 to 60.
Chief minister V S Achuthanandan said the decision would come into
effect from this year.
The total strength of teachers in five government medical colleges
in the state is about 1,900. Nearly 50 teachers are to retire on
March 31 next.
The government decision comes in the wake a circular by the Indian
Medical Council asking all the states to increase the age to 65
years.
The state government had agreed to increase the retirement age
when it banned private practise by the government doctors last year.
